GoatManWizard: From my perspective, a lot of layoffs happen due to, too many people being hired for "fake"(or overly simplified) positions. Where they'll break a job down into many smaller jobs. But then you end up with a lot of people doing little to no work. So layoffs don't always shake the company up and I'd assume most continue cruising with little issue.

Nemesis_Zer0: When it comes to big layoffs usually they get rid of people that arent 100% necessary to run the company, you can get rid of your sales and marketing department for example and just use a skeleton crew. Also sometimes you have a company that has its own janitorial staff who are payed well/have benefits etc and they just fire them all and hire a contractor to do it instead.
