They lose money on things like the hotdogs, but since they sell mostly house brand products, they can set their own prices and undercut competitors. They pay their workers and they also refused to price gouge like other companies. While the others are now like "okay okay we'll bring the prices down out of the kindness of our hearts and totally not because people are figuring out that we're price gouging", Costco only did what they needed to, and they were vocal about it, and that's very based, as the kids say.
