Is This The END of Path of Exile 1? Path of Exile 2 Actually Doomed?

worldreg: Everyone is making an assumption the new players for POE2 will keep coming back each league like the hardcore POE1 players ?

BloodlessTTV: "The development of PoE2 will not affect the development of PoE1 in any way. They are handled by different teams."

"An aspirant can afford to be promising. An emperor must keep those promises."

"For those who ascend too quickly, the fall is inevitable."

Fourside__: what really gets me is that most fans absolutely knew they cant expect the world from 3.26, but to hear that absolutely NOTHING has been done is frightening. So after 0.2 we can expect another 5 weeks of all hands on deck and then they start development on 3.26. But the chance that the "ship" is still burning is pretty high. lets be honest, they optimistically said PoE2 could be done in 6 months - i dont see them beeing done in the next 2 years unless we get a rushed release. IM SAD

milii113: I think this announcement would have been handled fine if it came out a week or two after release when the cracks began to show (and this decision was likely made)

But to be told time and time again that everything was on course or simply being tight lipped about things only for them to come out after almost 2 months and practically say "We havent been able to think about 3.26" feels like a gut punch

r2Kd0ugernaut: poe1 may not be dead, but my financial contributions to it sure fuckin are.

what a shit show.

bertjohnson401: You are on point about a project manager. Just watching Jonathan on the DM/Ghazzy podcast kind of wander about when he was talking about whether to release the last three acts one at a time or all together was just painful. It's one thing to not release a roadmap of your plans to the public, it's another to not have a plan going forward.

revoktorment440: Trials are absolute shit.. my 2 cents..

Arakki: GGG has to reach dev end of POE2 by FY2025 for Tencent, which is impossbile. They screwed both products by overscoping and feature creep with mismanaging all important parts.

AdamJohnson-lj3iz: The thing that shits me to tears right now is chumps putting up a screen shot of the Steam numbers for POE2 saying "see big numbers!" But what they fail to recognise is that POE2 has lost over 70% of player base in just over a month. If any other game dropped numbers like that in that time period they would be getting shitpanned all over the net.

angrywoodbooger3353: in all reality they are failing on both fronts at this time. Leaving poe1 behind while pushing a broken game, that hasnt really been supported well, will ultimately kill 2 games not just one

kokorochin01: It's very simple : Path of Exile 2 is doomed unless they correct and MASSIVELY rework systems and endgame. Period. At this point, from what I've seen, it's not looking good.

Balance is the least of the problems, even though yes it's a big issue

anemah2461: Alright, I tried to be patient. I really did. When PoE2 was first announced, I was actually excited. A sequel, but not really a sequel, just a massive update to the game I’ve sunk over a decade of my life into? Sounds great. But here we are, years later, and I’m just done with this entire situation.

GGG has completely abandoned PoE1 players. People who have spent thousands of hours, thousands of dollars, building up their accounts, their MTX, their experience in a game that was supposed to be evolving, not dying. And what do we get? Nothing. No meaningful leagues, no cool little side events to keep us engaged, just a barren wasteland of stagnation because “PoE2 is coming soon.”

And let’s be real, this isn’t even a new issue. If you’ve been playing PoE1 for a while, you know this has been happening for years. Every time the game started feeling rough around the edges, we got the same excuse:

“Yeah, we had to divert some resources to PoE2, but we’ll get back to improving PoE1 soon!”

Again and again, PoE1 players were asked to be patient, to wait just a little longer, because PoE2 needed resources “for now.” But now that we’re here? It turns out “for now” actually meant forever. PoE1 has been on life support for years, and we just didn’t want to admit it.

And the worst part? The people hyping PoE2 the hardest aren’t even the real PoE player base. It’s mostly D4 refugees—the same crowd that played Diablo IV for one season, got bored, and bounced. The same people who hated seasonal content in D4, but now act like they’ll be in PoE2 for the long haul. Spoiler: They won’t. These players aren’t the type to stick around for multiple leagues. They’ll come, play one or two seasons, and then move on to whatever shiny new ARPG is next. And when that happens? What’s left? A gutted PoE1 and a PoE2 that was built for tourists, not the dedicated community that kept GGG alive all these years.

Like, at least throw us something. A fun little Mayhem event? A tiny balance pass? Anything to show that PoE1 isn’t actually dead before PoE2 even releases? But nope. They just expect us to sit here and wait while they pull the rug out from under us.

I didn’t hate PoE2 before. I really didn’t. But after years of excuses, after watching a game I love get slowly suffocated, I can’t help but resent it now. PoE1 players were loyal. We were invested. And now we’re just discarded in favor of a new player base that won’t even stick around.

dpolenz79: You and Ben have by far and away provided the most accurate feedback on this game without sounding like fence sitting shareholders like some of be other streamers. Well done. That said the true issue here in my mind is the utter disregard for the amount of manpower this project was going to take including managing a second game. They’re trying to go the cheap route with labor and headcount and they’re going to suffer for that decision to run a tight ship in headcount. They don’t have the horses so stay in front of the scope of what they took on. It’s visibly obvious.

torvic1236: All I know is, every major update for Poe2's EA better be a banger. They can't take 4-5 months for every major update...I don't see the casuals sticking around and dealing with GGG's slow dev time. They'll be left with the core playerbase that resents them now.

rax313: This is such a well articulated review and feedback on the whole Path of Exile 1 and 2 situation. Well done!.

AnitaPOE2: When POE2 launched, me and all my buddies bought EA - packages, we even brought in poeple who never played POE because we were so sure that it's going to be a great game! Out of the 10 of us, nobody kept playing it. Not one. I hope GGG can turn this around

ChristianHeid7: POE 2 is in much worse state than even we the players actually realise now. The most serious one right now is that the game engine is just not holding up and causing hard crashes and even hardware failures for players. Yes - hardware is breaking because of POE 2... Just ask the POE 2 support team that is over their head in work and even legal issues atm. So GGG have no real option right now - other than to fix POE 2 before they get into even more problems.

From a gaming point of view - a good POE 1 league right now would actually have been the best solution for the company AND players, simply because so many are burning out of the 2x campaign chapters. Next content from GG will still force everyone to go through that content again and even MORE BURNOUT will set in. In other words... this is probably the worst situation that GGG could find themselves in for the long term future of BOTH games. But that is totally on them and a huge L they will have to take full responsibility for.

AdamJohnson-lj3iz: I have been saying this since launch POE2 the problem with this game is the constant GGG circle jerking, especially YT's that have basically just pissed in Jonathan's boots for the clout. This is because their ego has got too big. They need to be brought down and be hungry again. Only then will they be able to create something truly great.

LV9_x: Six years ago a civil war started. Some of us defended GGG on the basis they were good to us and have been good to us. The players six years ago who were worried, are rightfully justified at this time. When you've been supporting GGG and saying they will do the right thing, only for the naysayers to be able to tell you "I told you so", that sucks. That's like GGG held me still, and let those people just slap me because they called this nearly half a decade ago.

billcranston3882: I like the point you made re: EA not being enough of an excuse for PoE2's current state. Other than the # of years this has been under development, it's also still being called Path Of Exile. GGG should have nailed things down more tightly by now - some mechanics are simply ported over, skills are the same, etc. Also some design decisions beggar belief - all the back tracking, xp loss waystone loss, flacid lost towers.

Will PoE2 release in 2025 as Jonathan stated? Looking doubtful so far.

Entharias: I get that PoE2 takes priority, fine, it's their decision but for fuck's sake, give us a legacy league rerun or something, give us Necro Affliction, or hell i'll even take Crucible.

iKnowMungFu: The situation is pure garbage.

nelsonreyes1778: If this had been Blizzard they would have been crucified

powhit1176: They fucked up by making an endgame for PoE 2, it was early access it could have easily been just the campaign with cruel and nightmare difficulty and leave at just that for how long they needed. Current PoE 2 endgame needs to be completely deleted and remade from scratch...

anwar5792: This game has bigger problems, saying 25 exalted in general chat results in a mute...

kucksy1988: It’s strange because me and my mate were talking about this only yesterday.

2 mill players that have logged on for POE2 (those players consist of frustrated and fed up Diablo 4 players, Last Epoch players)

The game like you said is amazing for campaign but I think they missed the mark changing ascendency and fundamental mechanics that made POE the leading ARPG.

I think the concept behind the end game atlas has and can gain traction with tweaks but my opinion for what it’s worth is it’s tedious and are heavily based around RNG to progress or I’m possibly playing wrong.

That said of those 2 mill players let’s say half leave down the track that somewhat makes it viable in my opinion to continue Poe 1. At least that’s what I’m waiting for and he’ll if they announced 6 month leagues on POE 1 with added challenges and worked on a decent mechanic I think players would be happy with that news.

POE2 has the chance to be one of the best games made and released to date but seems what GGG was known for in the past with listening to the playerbase they just aren’t doing anymore.

Maybe the rumours are true and Chris Wilson is no longer around/retired and just attached to GGG by name now

But on the forums there was a really good post last year by Zion Halcyon that touched on Jonathan Roger’s stepping away from the vision of 1 and making Poe 2 his own which kind of shows.
