paradachshund: I'm a game dev and I'm not sure if the public is ready for what a prototype is like. This might be a shit show on the reaction front, especially since it's replacing ranked. I hope anet is ready for a lot of malding and can sift through it without getting discouraged. It seems like a great idea for a mode and I want to see it happen.
Lothkru: The problem is people want a new gamemode as an alternative, not to be an in-between season mode. Conquest shouldn't still be the only sPvP main per season (specially with how bad the matchmaking is and the lack of maps), we should have 3v3/2v2 AND conquest, not just one or the other and hopefully new modes as well in rotation, but not JUST conquest.
CuriousMoth: I imagine they want to make sure people are interested before they invest time into developing it, hence they're releasing the test version in a bare-bones way for now.

KamilDrakari: I agree that this probably doesn't really fix things that keep players out of PvP (or at least doesn't fix things that keep me out of PvP). I think a simple option for that would be just 1v1 deathmatch: No chance to ruin someone else's experience, no chance for someone else to ruin your experience, easier matchmaking, and it provides a no-frills environment to just figure out how combat works against a player instead of an NPC.
