25xxfrostxx: Real Sphene's VA killed it in 7.2. I really enjoyed the character, too. She's competent, well rounded, and properly flawed. Unfortunately I don't think she will be sticking with us beyond 7.5. I'm guessing she is going to G'Raha herself with the memories in the crown so she doesn't feel like an outsider anymore and can stick around to rule. I'd be perfectly happy to have her stay though as part of a new supporting cast.
Calyx clicked well with me, I like the cold calculating intelligent villain that doesn't act overly emotional. That way they can pull out a burst of actual emotion at the right moment and it has impact. I am guessing that he met an ascian and he's been manipulated by them (similar to Gaius). They probably told him they could help him unlock the secrets of electrope's soul manipulation and save him from his disease. Whether or not we see the ascian or just get a name drop like 6.5, we'll have to see but chasing an ascian to a reflection would be a decent hook for 8.0. If I had to guess, the specific ascian is likely Deudalaphon.
God_is_a_High_School_Girl: Calyx seems like the sort of character who opens Pandora's Box and unleashes the real big bads before getting unceremoniously merced.
cobbil: He's Pashtarot. Or influenced by him. Screams an Ascian.
Yoshi-P also told us, pre-Dawntrail, to remember the names and roles of the 14. Pashtarot is the seat of Preserving Law and Order. Preserving.... Preservation...
Someone else also noting that the 'fusion' they've been trying to do would end up fusing all the reflections and the Source. Sounds alot like a Rejoining to me.
chelsthegameruiner8669: I just hope they realize the potential of Calyx and keep him around for 8.0. Emet-Selch had a long time in the spotlight, its time to give it to another villain who doesn't boil down to someone with daddy issues like Zoraal Ja
Kylesico912x: Honestly hope he at least goes into 8.0. As well as add more to preservation. We need a new villainous group to sink our teeth into.
Lyn685: I feel like Calyx and his research, even IF he doesn't survive 7.3, will have far reaching consequences for this new Saga of FF14.
The Zodiark / Hydaelyn saga has always been about the Ascians trying to bring the past back, while Calyx might be the first step towards a group of villains that is solely focused on imagining a new future.
rexex345: Its kinda funny when you think about it, he's essentially a dark reflection of both our and the Paragons' standpoints. Simultaneously preserving everything as it is, while looking forward towards the future. And when you break it down, he's also the ultimate nihilist as teally none of this matters to him, its all just a reason to experiment, to find a theoretical or practical problem to solve for the sake of doing so. As Sim Sphene puts it, its all for his experiments (note she actually did say it as plural). He's basically created his own Elpis, but with none of the (even if flawed) ethics or purpose the ancients had.
lionard1726: I was watching another streamer's reaction to the MSQ and she pulled google to search and see if the name Calyx might be some FF reference, and she quickly found out that it is a part of flowers. Then she went and looked at the names of some FF9 villains, and guess what? Another character whose name also reference flowers in some in way is Garland. So I think it is safe to assume that Calyx may bear a similar role to Garland from FF9 and be a general reference to him. And on topic of some recent villains, I quite enjoyed Golbez, he still carried the suicidal themes that the other villains in Endwalker had, but he put his own twist in it, instead of being a nihilistic dipshit like Fandaniel and Zenos, he had that enormous guilt of breaking his world and letting his friend die, and I thought that it was interesting how he truly thought that the only way of saving himself and the rest of his folk was by basically burning down what remained of them, even if it meant causing suffering to others. He truly had no hope left in him, his only goal was basically pulling the plug of the 13th, and I like how the VA portrayed his sense of relief every time he had a monologue about his work being almost done, or his anger at seeing the and fighting the WoL
ShxpxRok: I just hope that he doesn't plan to lose like all other calculating villains he's beat up after we have blown up his ultimatech robot
SuperRamos619: I just had a thought. What Calyx seeks, is actually the orignal form of the Ancients. They had eternal life, and only chose to end their lives after they felt they accomplished what they wanted in life. Could Calyx Goal be the recreation of the Ancients?
This seems pretty out there. But it is an interrating thought !
YetoNexus: I'm gonna cook here.. I think with Calyx testing our strength he will want to make a simulant of some sort of the Warrior of Life... Now hear me out.. To mirror more of FF9 the Simulant will become our Kuja and the WoL Simulant will destroy Calyx and the Simulant will be the one we chase into 8.0 into other reflections. So very much like Kuja betraying Garlond in ff9 we could see a similar mirror like this from the future MSQ.. Just my thought
jasonwarnecke1560: Sometimes I hate how my brain works. When it was revealed he wanted the dimensional key my first thought was let’s stop carrying it around with us. Let’s put it somewhere he can’t get it. Lock it up in the Crystal Tower on the first. We’re the only one who can freely travel there so it would be safe till the threat was dealt with.
JL-GHK: > Calyx makes Endless, destroy everything else
>New race of Endless becomes ideal society
>Endless will be given powers of creation to build utopia
> Endless will eventually have existential crisis
IT'S A LOOP
highwhen: Not a fan of the anime cliche design lol he looks like a damn kid.
seoulbornetakehiko8635: As soon as Calyx popped up, I absolutely despised him. I also despised Asashi. So. Good character :D
yuukarnstein: 7.2 MSQ actually got me hooked back in the game! It's really an improvement over 7.0 MSQ.
NeatNightOwl: I didn't really feel him, myself. But JMulls' enjoyment of him makes me hopeful there'll be more layers to this guy.
Good breakdown - 14 is for sure pulling out of its tailspin
jadeparelius: I personally hope he sticks around long-term, but that's more just in the sense that I think he's really cool and I like a villain that can actually pose a physical threat to us ("I like the kind of villain that can beat my ass"). It all kind of ties into my desire for the WoL to be more expressive/have a little more personality, and I think a villain like Calyx could really piss the WoL off in a similar but still widely different way to Zenos. I personally hope for the long-term theory stated here of Calyx actually winning and that setting off the story for the next expansion. And while yes, his character will probably be used more to expedite Sphene's character growth, I can always hope lmao. I remember in 7.1 when one of the other characters noted that the reason the WoL wanted to go to Sphene's memorial, it was because they personally felt guilty about her death (definitely misremembering the exact phrasing but that general feel) and I latched onto it because I need more stuff like at the end of Endwalker where Alisaie was upset that the WoL had to carry everything of their shoulders as just one person. Like yes, we're the WoL, but we are also a person.
Back to actual video topic, I think if Calyx were to take someone hostage, it might be a situation where we get blasted with lightning from the apple pen again, and its Sphene he provides the ultimatum to. Like "let me have the key, and WoL lives, or not let me have the key, and WoL dies". I personally think that'd be really cool.
TacoLex: I want Sphene to come with us beyond Dawntrail.
New member of the scions
cjmiller6883: 8.0 theory: Calyx gains the key and opens a bridge to either the 1st or the 13th, invading it the way lizard boy did. Maybe a different reflection entirely. His actions wake something else, either the remaining Ascian fragments, or something new. Lots of unfinished threads they could tie in.
vincentbeton: Man I hope he won't try and kidnap Wuk Lamat. It would be like us slightly lowering our voice, saying "oh no, please don't".
Jokes aside, if Calyx has a greater impact on the Story going forward, I could imagine non-Ancients learning about the whole Shards and Zodiark thing, deciding to use this knowledge and technology to their own benefit, creating a new group of Antagonists now that there's no Ascians left to keep them in check
TheProphet49: I still think we will see Ultima. It is related to the Heart of Sabik(sp?) Which was in ARR, STORMBLOOD and ENDWALKER. I think with Zodiark, Hydaelyn and Asciand out of the way we could see the return of this powerful entity.
zarathos888: Zoral Ja and wuk was the victim of having a storyline forcibly attached to another storyline. There was no way any writer would have looked at merging the Alexandria storyline with the rite of succession and crank out good story. It was unimaginably dumb likely pushed by trial boss design being done ahead of the the writing, and a necessity to include 6 new areas every expansion. As crazy as this sound we should have gotten a better written Wuk, Alexandria should have been delayed instead of repeating the same mistake we made with lyse and trying to split her story with hien's. Because now post content msq has to pick up the pieces the same thing that happened with Stormblood when we got a half assed Zeno's fight the forced a dumb primal boss who never got to create the "great hunt" we were promised.
I'm glad square is on course to make a good story now, but man I wish square would learn from Shadowbringers and focus on writing cohesive stories and stop doing this messy multi story location nonsense.
mattp994: I don't feel like Calyx or Preservation have what it takes to be a multi-expansion antagonist group like Garlemald or Ascians. If anything I think it'll turn out to be an Ascian behind Calyx.
I'm not sure how you top the Ascian/Zodiark/Hydaelyn arc, but I feel like the best shot at doing so would be bringing Ultima back to the forefront. It predates the unsundered world and already has some build up to it. It could ne a multi-shard threat and could be why we seem to get gathering allies on multiple shards; Ryne, Zero, Sphene...
Mashangi: Chadley in his villain arc.
liftea7304: Imagine how crazy it would be if we actually lose in 7.3 against him and it leads into 8.0 with Sphene joining us.
TheGeneReyva: Yes. XIV needed some garbage NPC. Not content.
