SquigglyTheAsianPotato: From what I've heard the mod creator started making this mod to find people that keep undercutting them on the mb, so from the start the it had a nefarious purpose
Shizuma: This isn't about third party tools, it's about Square's security being relaxed. If people don't get this, it won't be fixed. People had been made aware of the security flaw in the client WEEK 1 of Dawntrails release. Even if the third party tool is removed, even if all
nebula8851: Basically translates as "Don't worry, your payment information and addresses are safe, we're just deciding between sending the dev a C&D, or just going straight to the nuclear option"
Neihel42: If SE removes the tool, it would only conceal the underlying security issues in FF14. Someone else would eventually create a similar tool and distribute it through private Discord servers. Instead, SE should address the root of the problem and implement a permanent fix, though they might not even bother. SE seems content with providing an insecure experience and likely wouldn't have acted at all if this issue hadn't been brought to widespread attention.
AllenAbbadonia: For the millionth time: The ONLY thing that will fix this is Squeenix changing the blacklist feature. Taking down the mod, suing the person, none of that will do anything. Your client has access to this information already, this is just someone who knows how to access it from there.
Kandei-Kain: People are likely going to think I'm blowing things out of proportion but I am not. I started playing this game the first Halloween event of 2.0 release. After trying it for 3 days I got it for my now Ex and we played together for many years. That relationship was horrible and I barely survived getting out of it. Once I escaped I left everything on my old characters alone, deleted most of them, and just went from 1 data center to a completely different data center I'd never played on before, made a new character, and started completely over. I was very careful never to visit that old data center/server once it was allowed, never made myself gear on my old main so if someone inspected me they could see my gear was made by my old main etc. I lost all of my achievement progress, all of my store outfits and mounts that were single character only, had to get back to max level and do all of the extra job leveling, relics, etc all over again. My Ex is a stalker who threatened to sit outside my house on the street, public property so I couldn't do anything, and kill me if I tried to get away from him. This plugin directly puts me in extreme danger as he will now have the ability to see where I've gone, all my new characters, and stalk and harass me again - I don't use plugins or mods or anything so I will have no idea if this newbie that I'm just trying to help out and be nice to is him or not. He is the type of person that will try to sneak back into my life pretending to be someone else to start manipulating and gaslighting me to the extreme of sanity, it is that bad. I'm now afraid to even log on my account because my helpful nature could open the door for me to be put right back into that trap that I nearly didn't survive the first time. This is not just "your card information is safe don't panic", this person could show up to my house if they get emboldened enough and I am not the only one that very bad things could happen to if people are allowed to stalk and harass with no consequences. Cider Spider pointed out that this is way more dangerous than people are talking about and is a way for vile people to do vile things and Yoshi P is not addressing it by fixing the code, the actual problem. It's not something to let slip as not important.
trinkeslato9598: instead of sending such information to the client, maybe SE should perhaps fix the issue itself instead of having Yoshida making a public statement of "Please don't do it" and do nothing
vincentbeton: "We asked the Villains not to behave like Villains. Also if they do their thing right in front of our eyes, we will sue them into oblivion"
Yeah, I am not optimistic about this
wimbeedoodle: Before DT released and they talked about this blacklist thing, I said this would happen, because I understood that there would be some kind of account-related data being broadcasted to make the blacklist work. As someone with no coding experience whatsoever, why could I foresee that, and the developers of the game could not?
rainerziehtkatapultenachgo9001: This is why we cant have nice things, like viera hat mods .. smh
SylvanFeanturi: For this tool to work, it uses the fact that Square is sending your account ID to the other's people's client. Why on Earth they are doing that in the first place is beyond me. It's horrible design, and they should fix this ASAP and not post stupid post on their forum. Square is not a good guy in this event.
providencebreaker1558: This is only going to escalate. Now that certain bad faith actors know there is a vulnerability in the code they are going to attack it relentlessly regardless of what the devs do.
thatcasualgamer8004: kinda disagree with the main take that add ons are inherently bad and not to be touched at all, tools aren't inherently a bad thing the context on how they are used is the important factor
toastedchoom4347: Maybe the GM's will start taking action against people who put the "here is my third party tool information" in player bio's and giving them suspensions. Their policing this stuff in game is useless, I remember pre-shadow bringers people just used to shut up about tools in game. Be it in their bio's, in chat's, hell it was considered good manners to not even mention this stuff in tells.
These days people don't care though, I see endlessly. I've even see people using shout/yell mentioning third parties tool's and not eating bans for it. I don't think Mod's & Third party tools will ever be stopped, but people need to be scared of talking about these things in game again.
touma-san91: It's funny how they "continue to take a firm stance against their usage" but literally doesn't do anything about fighting against those tools. They've existed for years at this point and nothing has ever been done about them. Even this will be forgotten in few months by the community and the devs, just like the whole raid debacle couple years ago that involved 3rd party tools. Those tools still exist btw, nothing ever happened to them.
And as for legal action.. I'm not sure what legal action they can actually do. The information the tool uses is available easily which is why the tool exists in the first place, at most it would be on level of cease & desist type of thing and Square Enix hoping no one copies the open source code of the plugin and make another plugin of similar nature.
ZombieWolfe: That's honestly pretty damn lazy instead of trying to find a fix/patch to block this mod they "ask nicely" to remove it or if not sue. So dumb.
smaller_cathedrals: For about a million years Yoshi-P has been saying that players should not be using 3rd party tools. Plain and simple. Over and over and over again.
Yet somehow, the community kept ignoring him.
And now that shit has finally hit the fan, everyone is crying and blaming Yoshi-P for damages caused by 3rd party tools.
You can't make that shit up.
Furthermore, all you keyboard warriors with absolutely zero knowledge about how servers are run, no competences whatsoever when it comes to software engineering or programming, telling the professionals at Square Enix to "just" do it your brilliant and easy way ... Don't you think they'd already done it that way if it was that simple?
There's been a lot of disappointment recently with the direction FFXIV is heading, sure.
And yes, criticism is absolutely necessary to improve certain aspects.
But for the love of God, the backlash Yoshi-P is getting for this here is uncalled for and unjustified.
JohnElstang: Hi Meoni, I want to say third party tools and milicious intent are not always 'hand and hand'. Are there stuff that help you cheat the game? Sadly yes. However a vast majority of those using third party tools do so for cosmetics only that are harmless. I know someone who downloaded a mod to change the drk movement to be more like Cloud's movement from FF7 Remake because he can't stand the default run option. I also know someone who has a PCT mod that makes all the spells 'Nier' themed turning him into a cool technomancer. I just want to say while there are a few bad apples, not everyone using does so out of milicious intent. But regardless thank you for spreading the word that Yoshi P and SE is aware of the mod in question because I am sure we can all agree that this tool should not exist.
GribGFX: Do you really personally condemn all third party tools or you would like to keep your bridge with Square?
If they cracked down on shaders there would be so many people banned. Model swapping is huge too. Both don't harm anyone.
SofieHiyatsuki: It is not a specific tool or addon per-say. It was a specific unsupported plugin for a tool that was created by a singular individual with semi malicious intent. Will not drop the name of said plugin but will say it was on github and github removed/hid the plugin as it violated their terms of service for the very same reason Yoshida is concerned. This is also deeply concerning as this is the first time his team has considered legal action.
rai5169: Wasn't aware there is some security issue going on with FF14 these days. Thanks fr updating us.
nyekomaru1993: Removal of the tool will not work now since the source code is out sadly. SE needs to do something on their end because even if they legally pursue the devs the tool can now be replicated/modified. They either need to rollback the blacklist changes or figure something new out...
tycopsyche: This is unacceptable, point-blank. This has me questioning how much Yoshida still cares about us.
Bonta2101: Sounds like an issue on SEs side. Wouldn't be the first time they downright ignore security risks.
animeking26: So are we finally going to talk about the third party tool that let's players know where all A ranks and S ranks are? It's a third party tool also. SE needs to full scorch earth all 3rd party tools full stop.
Wholesome_Fries: Ban all mods at this point...
