FFXIV Lore The Reveals of Patch 7.2

castoputa: I hope we get to rub in the fact he hadn’t cured lightning sickness in four hundred years, and we did it in a couple of weeks with a flying pig.

Lyn685: The 9th almost got primed for a Rejoining, and shortly after a Scientist appears that knows things that usually only an Ascian would know.

If Calyx wasn't at least aware of the Ascians, I'd find that a little unbelievable / consider that a missed opportunity!

Also: Emet knew about the Golden City / Living Memory, which was presumably created by Calyx and his Preservation!

johnpike2573: The thing Calyx said at the end of the patch was that it was time to pose a new question. That makes me think he might be another shard of Fandaneil.

WinkleAbiding: I think the fact he calls it the Ninth and the Source IS the proof of Ascian involvement. He wouldn't know to call his reflection any certain number unless Ascians at some point told them so.

MarkHorler: I 100% believe that there is Ascian involvement that is happening here as I do believe given that we haven't met/seen the rest of the convocation that are still around would suggest that we're not out of the woods just yet with them. Calyx could be a fragment of one (most likely Fandaniel given that similar vibes with his wording and the question at the end) as well as knowledgement of the other reflections. I am really excited to see where this goes in the next patch as while 7.1 was a slow start; 7.2 really gave us a lot to work with.

As for the real Sphene, it was really exciting to spend time with her as well as hinting that she is going to be a healer in the next patch which I hope (and I am not sure if others agree with) that she becomes a permament member of the Scions and join our adventures.

Blade12113: It's also important to note that Caylx was 100% observing our battle with Enless Sphene so his comment could also be referring to the fact he's forced you to use it again so he can get some data.

He could know about it from other sources like an Ascian but he could also know it from our battle.

I also 100% think Ascian's were involved in his knowledge.

WikiED: The way i took the Calyx's intro into the trial was that he had data that didn't make sense, we showed power in the dungeon but not enough to win against Queen Eternal and the second we use the Azem's Crystal it's like "there it is, the missing variable" to make it make sense.

rachaelward6552: I think it would be very interesting if Calyx was a former pawn of the Ascian in charge of his reflection. Especially if said Ascian was still alive and conflicted about how to move forward now that both the Ascian leadership and an integral part of Zodiark are no more.

maxkid6446: You know professor I was caught off guard by these revelations nevertheless I am pleased to se the REAL sphene

25xxfrostxx: What is the correct plural of Sphene? Sphenes? The Spheni?

It could be cool to see Sphene get her magical ability back and join on some adventures if she decides that ruling over a neon nightmare isn't for her.

I sure hope our new baddie doesn't make a Necron... Though I will say I love his theme. Suitably creepy.

GavinAstraWolf: I REALLY loved this patch. We got so much to work with here and seeing the REAL Sphene was really cool. I feel so bad for her waking up so many years later and watching her be a stranger in her own kingdom. I'm really excited to see where this is leading up too

ericbright1742: My own personal theory on Calyx's relationship to the Ascians is simple: He was a Lieutenant, like Gaius or Thordan was to Lahabrea, or Varis was to Emet-Selch, and was priming the Ninth for a Lightning Aspected Rejoining.

I entertain two ideas on what happened to the Ascian. Either he went to ground after Emet-Selch and Elidibus were slain, or... when Calyx got enough information from the Ascian, he absorbed their soul much like Thordan did to Lahabrea, and fed him into the soul forge that now fuels Everkeep.

TheMexRAGE: About intellignece also being a fraction, should be noted this is a biased opinion from Emet Selch that look down on sundered people (even more biased, because the people of the source and probably the reflections were never allowed to advance in the way the ancients did, by the ascians reseting civilization constantly) he seem to admit he is wrong when he admit that the ancients would have never accomplished what the people source were able to do (reach Ultima Thule)

808MichiOtaku: This Patch really got me thinking and pondering with the information given.

Bounced around the idea that there was still Ascian involvement happening this expansion and I'm glad it seems like it could be going in that direction. When Yoshida said in a PLL to remember and recall the roles of the Convocation and left it at that, I never let go of the thought that we could still possibly encounter members we've yet to meet.

Asides from the bigger overarching story being revealed, smaller things are turning gears in my head.

One of them being WHY was Sphene kept in a cryostasis. Something I'm hoping does get revealed, even if its something small.

Overall, enjoyed Patch 7.2 and all of the IX references that were added.

NagatoFan1: As SOON as she said she could use healing magic I went feral for the idea of a new healer next expac.

lunethharvey: An Ascian is DEFINITELY involved. It's so weird to think the Azem stone is now in danger, it's never been written as such before until now.

SubduedRadical: Here's one thought for ya, Synodic Scribe: Recall that memories are stripped from the Soul when it travels into the Lifestream to be reincarnated. So the same Soul may consistently be reborn, but each time, without its memories UNLESS uplifted. But...consider the Endless. What are they? They are the memories. So suppose an Ascian Soul was reincarnated on the Ninth, lived, then became an Endless. Would their "hidden" memories be unlocked without needing to be uplifted? What if Calyx was a case like Fandaniel/Asaih(sp?), but instead of being uplifted into an Ascian and accessing his prior memories, Calyx died/transferred into an Endless, then had those memories unlocked?

AnchorJG: What i loved was the low key frustration Calyx has towards us. The strongest bolt of lightning Solution 9 can generate? An inconvenience to us and a city-wide brown-out for everyone else. So often the trope is "I wish to gauge your strength" and the assumption is that they've accounted for every outcome they just need to decide which plan to use. And he gets his data and he's got nothing.

zakashin: Just a surface level guess, but Deudalaphon would be a solid choice if Calyx is revealed to be an unaccounted for Ascian.

"the Innovator - Appraiser of architecture and patron of invention" fits his character and role

gothicshark: Plan set in motion by Emet... Abandoned when we defeated him, it's kind of why he said we should investigate the other reflections. To undo his chaos.

robertrappaport3610: Something that interests me is that perhaps by writing error there seems to be two types of Endless. Cahciua seemed to be completely autonomous to make her own choices and intervene in the real world. Endless Sphene is said to have ‘acted according to plan,’ meaning that likely she too had a degree of autonomy that was fighting preservation’s logic; but only in the sense of trying to make everyone endless instead of some. Meanwhile, the majority of Endless we encounter within living memory appear stuck in repeating a single joyful day. Perhaps it could be canonically explained by stating that Calyx was ‘dumping parts of memory,’ to maintain a limited cache for easing the aetherical burden…. But someone this smart has to know that aether comes from the lifestream; so interrupting the lifestream will inevitably cause a power failure at some point. I heard him stating he would limit the number of Endless, but even with the efficiency of electrope he would need a constant source of power.

Personally, Slips and I don’t think he’s truly an Endless. I remain uncertain if he is an Ascian, but he definitely pulled knowledge from Ascians by proof of using their labeling system.

A whole lot of nothing to say that 7.2 was the breath of fresh air I needed in this expansion. It raises stakes, characters don’t act dumb as rocks, and it leaves mystery while answering some questions.

zamboozle3741: Either way, I really enjoy the direction the writing for this patch has taken. Everything feels largely like it belongs to FFXIV this time, and remains tonally congruent, with no Saturday morning cartoon shenannigans like 7.1

brianbell8382: If there is ascian involvement I'm thinking the specific ascian is Deudalaphon since their title marks them as The Innovator, appraiser of architecture and patron of invention. It sounds fitting for all the discovery and ingenuity surrounding electrope technology and the construction of Everkeep. There's also an interesting link between Deudalaphon and the element of lightning being that in FF12 Deudalaphon was the scion of light opposite of Adrammelech, scion of darkness and esper of lightning.

TeaTimeRumble: I don't wanna cope, but I do wonder if both with Zero and now Calyx, who do look similar, are we finally dealing with the Shards of Azem?

It would be fitting if at the end of every calamity, there's 1 fallen hero

We had Arbdert for the 1st, Zero for the 13th, now Calyx for the 9th, each having a similar story of being involved during their perspective "end times" and being left to try and fix it

yugen9754: Crackpot theory incoming, I feel Calyx realised the Azem symbol; the key being forced to work via the chalice so they could control it. Seeing the warrior of light use a somewhat similar magic freely might of kinda opened his eyes to see the key is somewhat linked to us. My hopes is somehow in the later patches we use the key accidently or something happens and we are on a new shard; without the scions and maybe Calyx is with us?

liftea7304: I love Sphene so much.

Also one question. In Shadowbringers we fought in each zone lightwardens. Is there a chance that we could have a similar case in the dome where there's a thunderwarden? Meaning that if we defeat it and absorb its lightning aether we can clear the sky?
