zackr.7628: You don't even need a new character if you want to replay the story. They implemented new game for that, which is really awesome
Ziialan: And because we're attached to the characters... we're attached to the game. That's genius, honestly.
poughin: legitimately the best thing about ffxiv and is why it’s my most played rpg to date
cekefun: I also love that during some parts of the Main story, if you have unlocked specific classes, they even acknowledge that! I adored the mention of me being a well renowned healer because I leveled White mage even though, at that moment, I was a Dancer! (I won't spoil the exact details, but this moment was in Endwalker)
timmyp7: Also worth mentioning that if you later have regrets about your character, what they look like, etc., you can get an in-game item called a Fantasia to re-do the character creation. So you have the best of both worlds, both keeping the same character between classes while still having some sense of flexibility with your in-game portrayal.
MrSpiderspider12: Coming from Monster Hunter Fanboi, THIS is one of my top reasons why I was interested in trying FFXIV
MrKahrum: runescape players: THATS WHAT WEVE BEEN SAYING!!!!
jeffrey12250: I don’t really get attached to characters but it’s nice to have access to all classes because I’m lazy and don’t want to replay the same content on new characters.
miss_bec: I remember EVERY phase my character went through. I spent three years of my life playing FF14, at least 6000 hours total, and I don't regret a second of it. I love my dumb green idiot catgirl, I wouldn't replace her for the world.
edit: ok maybe i regret island sanctuary but that doesnt count
slayerdwarfify: Totally agree. I went into the game with a very basic backstory to get me started and she developed from there.
I even turn the new jobs she gets into plot points for her. She started as strictly a healer for example, wanting nothing more than to help everyone she met and not get involved in any of the bloodshed herself. Over the course of ARR and especially leading into Heavensward, she gradually began to realize that was no longer an option and that she would have to learn to get better at fighting if she wanted to protect those she cared about - her new family, the Scions. That was my IC justification for swapping her into her first dps job as a Monk.
CrustyFox87: Terraria does it like that too; the weapons themselves are the class and not the character wielding them, so you can mix and match different classes to best suit you. I’m one of those gremlins who uses every class at once, lol
Artaimus: FF11 had the job change system that let you do much the same. Need a healer? Jump back into your Mog House and switch over. Want to be a sneaky tank of a ninja? Change to Nin/War and become a dodge tank that makes the healer slightly redundant.
lakie92: This was the reason i started playing ff14, and its still my favourite thing 10 years later.
cutesweetkookie2117: FFXIV is my first mmo and knowing that this isn't s thing in other mmos will make this my favorite by default
Abhay0505: They really solved a long lasting problem with popular RPGs
TLNik: I mean, we all know why other MMOs don't do that... they want to sell you more character slots. And even here FFXIV beats them with selling additional retainers for extra inventory, or providing higher or lower amount of character slots per server depending on if you run a cheaper renewable monthly plan or pay with game cards or buy a sub normally for set amount of months.
potaterjim: I really like making new characters, trying new classes and builds
But what I hate
v8bitecho: The way I look at 14 is that its not an mmo with a final fantasy skin, its a final fantasy game with and mmo skin.
You can put 100s of hours into that game, never having to interact with another player save for 2 - 3 mandatory instances for story progression and because of this the game treats you as a final fantasy protagonist with all of the responsibility that entils
kelvani: The issue (not in a negative way I'm an alt guy) I have is that I get so invested in my character being whatever classes I start to think "oh dark knight doesnt feel in character as a class for them" and then i have to pick up a different tank class and make an alt to try out other classes on because I'm annoyingly devoted to my personal rp and the characters story. I also like having different visuals occasionally bc some outfits just don't look good on my main (very tall Elezen guy)
Nagantios: That's the beauty of FFXIV. You can be EVERYTHING.
soulechelon2643: I actually was conflicted about this as someone who used to love making tons of different characters. This was because in literally every game I play with character creation, I recreate characters from stories I've written. So when I got to FFXIV, it felt extremely weird to have my thieving "neko" character be a dragoon, or a paladin, or a dark knight, and so on. But other than that personal hang up, I totally agree.
