People trapped in jars are forcefully separated from the World, and consequently, of it's pleasures. They become unwilling ascetics.

I think that they are the same genus or species as Torrent, the Ancestor Spirits we fight are just decomposed versions of these creatures, and that they are the Divine Beasts spoken of in Hornsent legend. It is said that these creatures once flew through the skies, which is reflected in-game with how Torrent and the Ancestor Spirits jump around

justkubz: If you found the Scaduview Cross site of grace, which is where Miquella divests his eye (singular), you'll notice that there is no way to reach that location aside from activating the spirit spring, which would imply to me that Miquella needed a spirit steed to reach that location

Miquella props us up so that we can kill Radahn since he calls us "Champion of the Festival" but this plan seems either 300 IQ or just plain luck that things would fall into place so well
TheRealJohnux: Ranni has a different Dialog if you deny having Torrent twice. She will leave those items there and will tell us she is supposed to give us those items "at the behest of Torrents Former Master" which would link Miquella to Ranni and Melina in a very significant way that not a single Souls Lore Youtuber dares to point out.

I reckon that’s why out of all her pleasant dialogue that’s very formal, when giving you torrent she flatly says “treat him with respect.” She and torrent are clearly in a similar state of being in some way too.

Ansbach, Miquella’s biggest hater himself, said that he doesn’t believe that Miquella understands the ramifications of his own actions. St. Trina also confirms this. I don’t think Miquella has a good understanding of others’ feelings.
Slayton1978: The spirit steed whistle is not just a plainly designed ring. It's a "delicate goldwork ring". The creator is clearly a craftsman connected to gold who can embroider golden threads with such degree of detail. Such is the art of Goldwork.

The whistle was created with intent. Perhaps the whistle tone it creates can only be answered by a specific steed. The mystery for me is how she knows of Torrent, by name, and how the ring ended up with Melina.
grownupjizz: I think there are some simpler explanations like Miquella just helping Melina by giving her a spectral steed(he is known to help his siblings).

Checkman282: I've been wondering why Torrent is helping the player given that we end up taking Miquella down and ruining his plan. Maybe Torrent also had a charm broken when the great rune breaks, maybe Torrent is a shadow-bound beast that turns on Miquella like Blaidd with Ranni, or maybe Torrent is more of a St. Trina fan and knew Miquella was cooked on his current path?

cyber_crysis_: Torrent was definitely Miquella’s horse I think even before the dlc. In the blue fields, and the fissure there are huge monuments with Torrents head on it. He could’ve been more St. Trina’s mount especially considering death is heavily associated with cold weather and water, and Torrent means a heavy storm. At first I thought he could’ve been Godwyn’s but now Miquella makes more sense.

Demokaze: Don't think Torrent is necessarily young. The land of shadow for example has large sheep but that doesn't necessarily mean the other sheep eventually grow to their size. Another example is Gransax, Greyoll and whoever that skull in Farum and corpse at Jagged Peak belong to. Those dragons are massive but it doesn't mean the others will grow to their size. Bayle is called the "oldest, vilest dragon of them all" by Florissax and yet he's not that big.
0512friend: The biggest problem I have with connecting torrent and Miquella is that the timeline doesn't make sense to me.
So Miquella only had access to the land of shadow after being kidnapped by Mogh and was waiting for Radahn to be killed.
His journey across the land of shadow divesting his parts is happening as the tarnished is also journeying the land of shadow and we are just behind him. (Evidenced by his great rune breaking as we are getting close to shadow keep) So that means that his journey is happening by the time we are already been given torrent.
As unsatisfying it is it makes more sense if it's just another spectral steed.
danielrobinson7872: The statues on the stone coffins are depictions of a spectral steed. I thought they were bulls at first until I noticed they had horse hooves. I think Torrent is the Lands Between equivalent of the grim reaper. Ferrying souls to the afterlife. Miquella's original body is clearly deceased. Torrent brought his spirit to the land of shadow.
