But I wanted to point something out: it's confirmed in item description that Messmer was an older brother to Radahn, so he was born before or while Radagon was still married to Rennala. So probably Messmer crusade happened while Godfrey was still Elden Lord (maybe it's the whole reason why Godfrey lost his grace, since he had crucible knights as his personal guards and was close to Morgott - it seems he had no problem with the crucible). We're still not sure who was Messmer's (and Melina's) father. Maybe it was Godfrey himself and their red hair is due to the duality that Marika was suffering when she was split into Radagon or maybe it was Radagon himself in an extramarital relationship while Marika was still married to Godfrey - another potential reason for him losing his grace.

So the Hornsent may have just been xenophobic. Which is awful. But pretty common.
