lm7677: What matters most in a spirit ash (to me at least) is the emotional connection. This is why the only dlc spirit ashes that matter to me are Huw and the fingercreeper. They are my brother-in-arms and son respectively and I would burn the world for them.

Lexsed: Regarding Jolan summon for Messmer: I did end up testing on 2 separate characters and it is simply quest progress being skipped if you don’t talk to Ymir after visiting only one finger ruin, as talking when you visit both changes the quest state too far along

Edit: As it's been pointed out to me, the god slayer seal technically scales highest until 69 (still nice) pure faith, where the erdtree seal will become better at 70 and onwards
